But this time around, it’s slightly veiled in darkness-maybe not darkness, perhaps, but a definite dimming of the lights. Editors’ Notes Heart: Attackthe minute-long intro of Neon Indian's 2011 album Era Extraa instantly brings to mind the ‘80s-based, synth-heavy psychedelia of previous Neon Indian albums (2009’s Psychic Chasms and its 2010 follow-up, Mind CTRL: Psychic Chasms Possessed ). Part of what makes Era Extraña a great follow-up to Psychic Chasms is that it features the same lazy summer feel that made Neon Indian’s debut so popular. Palomo certainly expresses these feelings of being lost and alone in the themes and tone of the new record. The group has released three studio albums: 'Psychic Chasms' (2009), 'Era Extraa' (2011), and 'VEGA INTL. The group is the current project of musician Alan Palomo, also known for his work with the band Ghosthustler and as the artist VEGA.

Palomo wrote and recorded Era Extraña in constant solitude last winter in a small apartment in Helsinki, Finland. Perhaps the newfound focus present in the record came from the setting in which the album was created. But with his second run, Palomo gets it right.

The intention to create a fluid record was there, particularly with the sample from “6669 (I Don’t Know If You Know)” resurfacing in the finale “7000 (Reprise),” for example. That’s not to say that 2009’s Psychic Chasms was disjointed, but it was certainly fragmented. This cohesiveness is something that sets Era Extraña apart from its predecessor immediately. In other words, one could occasionally come back to it every once and a while. In the first few seconds of Era Extraña, we hear the sound of swirling 8-bit particles rapidly coming to a celestial boil. It is spectacular even though it doesn't have long longevity it still does age well. While would think some of the songs that weren't standouts would remain like that, it turns out after various more listens they develop into something worthwhile.

Important: While originally my conclusion had been that Era Extraña was a very good album because the album only had a few worthwhile songs, this proved to be changeable. So 6 total songs worthy of attention and they are: Polish Girl, The Blindside Kiss, Era Extrana, Halogen (I Could be a Shadow), Future Sick, and Heart: Release. Update: After checking the back of the CD album I noticed that the songs I thought were extras weren't really extras. Lovely album art by Aaron Brown and Ben Chappell and the Focus Creeps. Those are Polish Girl, Era Extrana, Halogen (I Could be a Shadow), Future Sick, and some other unnamed song that must mention did not appear on the music booklet. After buying on CD and listening through, I have to say out of the 12 total songs this album has 5 songs worthy of attention. Reminded me sort of New Order but more modernized and OK a smidge one of a kind. A song I found distinctly refreshing for Electronica music. I initially bought Era Extrana by Neon Indian because online I caught a whiff of Polish Girl.
